Chinese Defense Minister Holds Talks with Indonesian Ministers

Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian arrived in Jakarta Wednesday and held talks with Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Politics and Security Soesilo Bambang Yudhoyono, agreeing to strengthen military ties between the two countries.

Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian arrived in Jakarta Wednesday and held talks with Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Politics and Security Soesilo Bambang Yudhoyono, agreeing to strengthen military ties between the two countries.

"My visit, with an aim to frequent our contact and enhance mutual understanding and trust, is precisely in the interest of consolidating such relations between our two countries and armed forces," the defense minister said in a press release.

Similarly, the Indonesian coordinating minister said that Indonesia and China will redouble efforts to promote cooperation such as exchanging visits of military students, military officials, and bilateral dialogue over regional security.

"Our good relations with China are aimed at maintaining peace and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region," Yudhoyono told a press conference after the meeting with the Chinese guests, citing that the two countries have similar views in eradicating terrorism.

To achieve the purpose, the two sides urged that the United Nations to be more active in playing its role combating international terrorists, and calling on the countries in the Asia-Pacific region to increase cooperation in security area.

The Indonesian senior minister also said that China has supported the steps already taken by the Indonesian government in diminishing such dangers, and fully supports the Indonesian territorial integrity.

Meanwhile, the Indonesia side has also reaffirmed to support One China policy, he said.

Previously, Chi had a meeting with Indonesian Defense Minister Matori Abdul Djalil. Matori said that Indonesia and China will boost their military cooperation.

"There will be specific cooperation between the two countries, which will be followed up," said Matori after his meeting with Chi.

Chi, who is also Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission of the People Republic of China, is on a five-day visitto Indonesia.

He is scheduled to meet Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri at the State Palace and Indonesian Defense Forces Commander Endiartono Sutarto at the military headquarters Thursday.
