Xinhua News Agency published a commentary Wednesday calling on the whole nation to understand the significance of finding new jobs for workers laid off by state-owned enterprises.

Re-employment of laid off workers is a matter that has a bearing on the well-being of those involved, relations between the Communist Party of China and the general public, the status of the Party as a ruling party, and the country's reform, development and stability, the commentary said.

It said the issue of China's oversupply of labor will remain for a long time as its population nears 1.3 billion, making unemployment the most complicated problem in the world and creating jobs the most difficult.

The fluctuation of the world's economy and economic restructuring will have a great impact on China's labor supply after the country entered the World Trade Organization, which may worsen unemployment.

Creating jobs and re-employing the laid off workers is a major economic and social issue that affects the overall situation of the country. Further economic and industrial restructuring, reform of state-owned enterprises and technological progress will result in more laid off workers in the future. The Party, the government and the whole society should take good care of and help these people, the commentary said.

It pointed out that the fundamental way to increase jobs is to boost economic development. Implementing an active employment policy and maintaining economic growth are the two important targets of the work of the Party and the government at present and in a long time to come.
