China has classified its water areas into some 13,000 water environment zones according to different functions and uses of water resources in these areas, a senior official in charge of environment protection said Wednesday in Beijing.

The classification of 600 river systems, including 5,737 rivers and 980 lakes and reservoirs, has resulted in the designation of environmental zones for natural protection, drinking, industrial and agricultural use, sightseeing and entertainment.

The classification, which took 13 years, has provided a solid foundation for better water protection in the country, said Wang Jirong, deputy director of the State Environmental Protection Administration.

The work was done in accordance with relevant laws and regulations on water pollution prevention and quality of surface water, taking into account the capacity of water areas, the needs of social and economic development and the requirement for sewage discharge control.

Wang said the completion of the classification eases the administration of the water environment and the implementation of the surface water environmental standards.
