Visiting top Chinese lawmaker Li Peng and Governor General of Australia Peter Holling worth said in Canberra Wednesday that they both are pleased with the strong momentum of development of bilateral exchanges and cooperation, and are confident in a broad prospect for progress in various fields.

Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, said that China appreciates Holling worth's support for Australia's increasing contacts and cooperation with China.

He reviewed his visit to Australia starting on Sunday, noting that it has thus far been a great success, since all the leaders of the country and people from all walks of life he met all agree that China and Australia share the common interest of economic progress, and aspire to propel the bilateral relations to a new level.

Li noted that a great number of Chinese students are now studying in Australia and the Chinese language has become one of the most popular foreign languages here in this country. The top lawmaker said he expects that cooperation in culture, education and technologies between the two countries will be further expanded.

Hollingworth said he shared Li's views on bilateral relations, which he said are characterized by sustained, steady and tangible progress and with a bright future.

He learned the history of China when he was young and expects to know more about the country, he told Li.

He said Australia and China are huge countries in many regards, namely, both are huge in terms of territory, and one has a huge market and another boasts rich resources, which has made it possible for the two peoples to join their efforts for common prosperity and development.

The governor general said compared with China, the continent nation is relatively young. But drastic changes have taken place in recent years, which have transformed it into a melting pot of various ethnic groups and cultures, he said, adding that the Chinese Australians who are known for their hard working spirit have contributed a lot to the society.

After the meeting in the governor general's residence, Li arrived at Sydney by special plane Wednesday afternoon to continue his official goodwill visit to this country.

Australia is the last leg of Li's four-nation Asia-Pacific tour, which has already brought him to Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines.
