Chinese University Joins Int'l Antimatter Detector Project

Shanghai Jiaotong University Wednesday took part in a research project on an updated version of high energy particle detector called Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) for the International Space Station.

Professor Xie Shengwu, president of the university, and Nobel Laureate Samuel Ting, who directs the international research project, signed an memorandum of understanding in Shanghai Wednesday.

The device will be used to detect such high energy particles as antimatter and dark matter to explore the secret of the universe.

The research project involves scientists from 16 countries and regions, including the Untied States, Russia, Italy, China and Japan.

The research center is based in Switzerland.

The detector is scheduled to be placed in the space station in 2004.
