China on Thursday urged the Group of 77 to push for the attainment of the United Nations development goals.
In a speech at the 26th annual meeting of foreign ministers of the Group of 77, held on the sidelines of the 57th session of the UN General Assembly, Chinese Permanent Representative to the United Nations Wang Yingfan put forth a three-point proposal on the priorities of work of the group during the current General Assembly session and in the future.
The Group of 77, set up in 1964 by 77 developing countries, comprises 133 members today. As the largest Third World coalition in the United Nations, it provides the means for the developing world to articulate and promote collective economic interests.
Wang proposed that in the next five to 10 years, the Group of 77 focus its efforts on pushing for a comprehensive implementation of resolutions adopted and consensus reached at global conferences such as the Millennium Summit, the UN conference on financing for development and the summit on sustainable development, so as to bring real benefits to developing nations.
He also recommended that the group support the healthy development of the multilateral trade system, press for a comprehensive implementation of resolutions related to developing countries adopted during the
Uruguay
Round of trade talks, push for an agreement on an all-round, balanced agenda for trade negotiations, urge developed countries to open their markets, oppose trade protectionism in various forms and propel the process to establish new international trade rules conducive to developing countries.
Wang also urged the group to strengthen cooperation on development among group members, saying that they all belong to developing countries and are faced with similar opportunities and challenges.
He said the group should enthusiastically accelerate the implementation of the New Partnership for Africa's Development, to which the international community has attached growing importance.
He also urged the group to push for practical results at a high-level South-South conference on science and technology, to be held in Dubai soon, to facilitate development in developing countries.
