Chinese pop star Gao Feng, famous throughout the country for his 1994 hit "Big China", has died aged 35 at a Beijing hospital where he was being treated for pneumonia, press reports said Friday.

Since his manager Da Tang announced on Monday that the star singer was stricken with pneumoncystis carinii pneumonia, Gao's situation has drawn tremendous attention from China's music scene, Beijing's Xin Daily said.

Pneumoncystis has long been listed as the leading cause of death for people suffering from AIDS.

A series of media reports have speculated the star had the disease -- a major stigma in socially conservative China -- although in the past days Da and Gao's family have denied this to Beijing newspapers.

Doctors at the Beijing Union Hospital, where Gao died late Thursday night, refused to reveal the precise cause of death, the reports said.

Gao, who had five music albums to his credit, also wrote songs for such well known singers as Hong Kong's Andy Lau, and mainland diva Tian Zhen.
