China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are geographically close to each other and both are facing development opportunities and severe challenges in the field of transport, Chinese Minister of Communications Huang Zhendong said Friday in Jakarta.

"With continuous improvement in infrastructure, facilitation and standardization, transport will play to the full of its essential supportive role in the establishment of China-ASEAN free trade area," he said in an address delivered to the first China- ASEAN Transport Ministers' Meeting (10+1).

China, Huang said, has established several areas of cooperation with ASEAN countries, including the agreement on Commercial Navigation on the Lancang-Mekong River signed together with Laos, Myanmar and Thailand in April 2000.

"The road between Kunming in China and Bangkok in Thailand is another important link between China and ASEAN countries," he added.

The minister also welcomed the Trans-Asia Railway initiated by Malaysia that will enhance the transport links between the country and the region.

"We are willing to participate in the construction of the railways outside China, as well as to explore the possibility of enhancing railway transit transport cooperation with our neighboring countries," he affirmed.

China also enjoys good relations with ASEAN countries in the field of maritime transport and civil aviation cooperation, willing to strengthen the friendly relationships, Huang said.

The "10+1 conference on transportation" between China and the 10-member ASEAN has been running since Thursday, attended by transport ministers of participating countries and representatives of leading private transportation and logistics companies in the region.

ASEAN comprises Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Brunei Darussalam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.
