China's economy is developing rapidly and China is becoming an increasingly important player in international economic field, according to a symposium of experts held Friday.

Against a backdrop of a global economic slowdown, China's continuously rapid growth has caught unanimous attention of the experts panel. "I would like to expect close to 8 percent growth this year," said Pieter Bottelier, Adjunct Professor at Harvard University and former Chief of the World Bank Mission in Beijing.

Bottelier said the market economy reform in China is "much much better" than many economists thought. He believes China's macroeconomic performance is positive in terms of many aspects. Healso mentioned the strong external accounts of China.

Edward J. Lincoln, Senior Fellow of the Brookings Institution, said China's manufacturing is moving up "at a stunning pace."

Lincoln analyzed the economic relations between China and Japan. In his views, China's entering into the World Trade Organization and its opening-up is good for Japan. China is becoming a more attractive investment place for Japan, he said.

Experts also talked about the challenges for the China's economy. Robert A. Kapp, president of the US-China Business Council, said the issue of overpopulation and unemployment, especially in the rural area, are big challenges.

As to the economic relations in Asia, James T. H. Tsao, Senior Editor of the Journal of Asian Economics, said he believed that more economic and trade exchanges are good for the both sides of the Taiwan Straits.
