China Beats Argentina to Enter Top Eight in Women's Basketball Worlds

China routed Argentina 102-55 in their third and last group E match at the 14th women's world basketball championship here on Friday.

China routed Argentina 102-55 in their third and last group E match at the 14th women's world basketball championship Friday in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province.

With this win, China finished third in the 6-team group and will join Brazil, Australia and Spain into the Quarter-finals in Nanjing.

Argentina and Yugoslavia will go the Zhenjiang for the classification round of 9th to 12th places.

Top-four winners from Group F the United States, Russia, Franceand South Korea also qualified for the top-eight while Lithuania and Cuba will play with Yugoslavia and Argentina in Zhenjiang.

Sui Feifei scored 20 points to lead six Chinese girls in double figures. Miao Bo added 18 and Ren Lei had 15.

Gale Veronica was the only player in double digital with 25 forArgentina, who was held to only 25% in shooting percentage by their faster and taller Chinese opponents.

China outrebounded Argentina 63-35 and stole 15 balls from Argentine hands.

"Coach Gong Luming told us to play with speed from the very beginning, and we did very well by steeling and fast breaking," said Ren Lei, who also had 3 steels and 2 assists for China.

China played eight respective players in the first quarter and seven of them scored to build a 36-10 lead in the first 10 minutes.

"The Chinese players did better than our team in every aspects, the difference is not only in sizes," said Eduardo Pinto, head coach of the Argentine team.

China hit 9 for 22 from the arc while is was 2 for 22 for Argentina.

The 16-team tournament will have a two-day off during the weekend and competition is to resume on Monday as China faces Russia, the United States plays Spain, Brazil takes on South Korea, Australia meets France.

The winners of the quarter-finals will enter into the semi-finals while the losers play for the 5th to 8th places.
