Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji Friday in Vienna expressed his hope that China and Austria will continue to strengthen political relations, expand economic and trade cooperation, and push forward bilateral cooperation in culture, education, science and technology, especially in agriculture, forestry and environmental protection.

Zhu made the remarks during talks with Austrian Federal Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel.

Zhu suggested that the two sides study ways of tapping potential in bilateral cooperation, as Austria has advanced technologies and rich experience in environmental protection whichis worth learning by China.

Zhu said that since the two countries established diplomatic relations 31 years ago, bilateral relations have progressed continuously, leaders of the two countries have kept in constant contact, and bilateral trade has increased rapidly although the trade volume is not big.

Also, bilateral cooperation in technology and investment has progressed smoothly and bilateral exchanges and cooperation in culture, education, science and technology are very active, noted Zhu.

Schuessel said there have been continuous exchanges between government departments of the two countries this year and Zhu's current visit is a climax in bilateral relations.

Zhu said although international situations have undergone great changes, the two governments' policies on developing Sino-Austrian friendship and cooperation remain unchanged, and China appreciates Austria's "one-China" policy.

He went on to say that China and Austria have no conflicts of fundamental interests and no unresolved historical problems. Rather, the two countries share identical or similar views on many major international and regional issues, and have sound consultations and cooperation in the United Nations and international affairs, he said.

Noting that China is an important trade partner of Austria, Schuessel said Austria has advantages in economy, culture and environmental protection and his country attaches importance to cooperation with China in environmental technologies and economy.

Austria also hopes to strengthen cooperation with China in agriculture, hydropower generation, civil aviation and expressway construction, and Austrian businesses are interested in investing in China, added Schuessel.

He also pointed to the "one-China" policy pursued by the Austrian government since the two countries set up diplomatic relations.

Before the talks, Schuessel presided over a welcoming ceremony for Zhu, who arrived here Thursday evening on a four-day official visit to Austria.
