Premier of Queensland Peter Beattie said Friday that the coastal state of Australia is eager to expand ties with China as Chinese constitute the fastest growing people coming to this tourist resort each year.

Beattie made the remarks while meeting with visiting top Chinese legislator Li Peng, or chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, who left Sydney Friday morning and arrived here in the afternoon.

The State of Queensland and cities under its jurisdiction have twinned with 29 provinces and cities of China, of which the sisterhood between Queensland and China's largest port city of Shanghai is the most prominent, said Beattie.

The premier said that according to government view, such relations have led to closer economic cooperation between Queensland and related Chinese provinces and cities.

He promised that Queensland supports Beijing's hosting of the 2008 Olympic Games and Shanghai's bidding for the 2010 World Expo,to which Li expressed gratitude.

Li said that Queensland is one of the most important regions in Australia with that China should develop more contacts and exchanges. He said China's relations with Queensland, just as with Australia as a whole, will prosper with shared interest in economic development and aspiration for cooperation.

Australia is the last leg of Li's 20-day four-nation tour of the Asia-Pacific region, which has already carried him to Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. Before arriving in this coastal city, Li also visited Canberra and Sydney of Australia.
