One of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's bodyguards was shot dead and two others wounded Friday by Israeli snipers surrounding Arafat's headquarters in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

Sources reported from inside Arafat's compound that the bodyguard, a member of the elite Force 17, is Mohamed Hamooda, 27, who was killed by a gunshot fired by an Israeli army sniper as he stepped downstairs from the second floor to the conference room.

The bullet came from one of the windows and hit his head, said the sources, adding that the Israeli army are escalating operationsin and around Arafat's headquarters in Ramallah.

Arafat's bodyguards said Hamooda is from the Jabalya refugee camp in the Gaza Strip and he has been besieged with Arafat since last December, when Israel decided to confine Arafat to his headquarters and isolate him.

They also said the Israeli tanks had prevented ambulances from reaching the compound, leaving the man bleeding for more than two hours.
