Foreign car makers and dealers competed to show off their products and services at western China's largest ever motor show which opened Saturday at Xi'an, Shannxi Province.

The 17-day fair is seeing the eager presence of more than 200 brands on display, including Mercedes-Benz, Cadillac, Peugeot, Opel, Toyota, Hyundai and Daewoo.

Domestic contenders, mostly Sino-foreign joint ventures, are also keen to show their new vehicles, including brands of the top three makers: Audi and Bora from FAW Group in Shenyang, Passat from Shanghai Volkswagen and Ellyse from Dongfeng Motor Group, which this week struck a one billion-dollar deal with Japan's Nissan to produce 550,000 vehicles annually by 2006.

A foreign dealer said China's west was an untapped, yet potentially huge market.

"Those who get in first will get profits, but not latecomers," he added.

It is the common views among participants that as China is implementing the western development strategy and pushing for an even faster growing economy, incomes will surge and so will purchasing power.

The annual fair was initiated in 2001 and is expected to have hundreds of thousands of visitors.
