Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress(NPC) of China, concluding his four-nation tour of Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Australia, left this coastal city of Cairns of Australia Sunday morning for Beijing.

"Chairman Li's meetings with more than 70 presidents, prime ministers, parliamentary speakers, celebrated politicians and other dignitaries in the past 20 days have further boosted China'sties with the four countries," said Lu Congmin, deputy secretary-general of the NPC Standing Committee.

"The official goodwill visit has achieved its preset purposes and is a great success," he said, who highlighted the following key aspects of Li's visit:

-- During the meetings, Li stressed China's long-standing determination to expand cooperation and exchanges, especially in the economic field, with the four Asia-Pacific nations, and China's progress will conduce to their well-being rather than threaten their development. Li also stressed that some major deals awarded to the four countries demonstrate China's sincere willingness for mutual beneficial cooperation with the neighboring countries. Leaders of the host countries responded that the China policy is one of the most important foreign policies of their governance, and they are eager to further advance relations with China.

-- Li elaborated on China's people's congress system during meetings with his counterparts. Consensus has been reached that parliamentary contacts can serve the purpose of promoting economic development. They agreed to increase such contacts and exchanges to various levels, including the sub-committees of the legislatures.

-- There are a large number of overseas Chinese living in Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines, and the new immigrants to Australia are also on the rise. On the issue of overseas Chinese, Li pointed out that their motherland is no longer China, but the country they have been living in for generations; China is just their ancestral home, and they are China's relatives. Li expressedhis hope that the overseas China can serve as bridges for bilateral ties and friendship between China and the countries they live in. Li's remarks were warmly welcomed by leadership of the four countries, as well as overseas Chinese residing there.

-- Li explained China's stance on the Taiwan issue, and the leadership of the four countries all reiterated their adherence to the principle of one China and pledged not to engage in official contact with the island authority.

Li's visit has strengthened mutual trust, expanded common ground, promoted friendship and deepened cooperation between China and the four Asia-Pacific countries, Lu said.
