Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji arrived in Copenhagen Sunday morning for an Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) and a China-EU Summit. He would also pay an official visit to Denmark.

In a written statement distributed at the airport, Zhu expressed the hope to enhance ties with Europe and Denmark.

"This (ASEM) summit is the first meeting of Asian and European leaders after the Sept. 11 incident," Zhu said, adding: "It is of great significance for leaders to discuss how to strengthen cooperation between Asia and Europe under the new circumstances."

Noting that relations between China and Europe have entered "the best development period," Zhu expressed conviction that the fifth China-EU Summit will further push forward the overall development of Sino-European relations.

He said that friendly relations between China and Denmark can be traced back to ancient times, and that "China attaches great importance to developing friendly cooperative relations with Denmark in all areas on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit."

"I will be glad to have an in-depth exchange of views with heads of participating countries at ASEM and leaders of Denmark on issues of common interest and I will also meet with parliamentary members of Denmark and business people," said Zhu.

The Chinese premier arrived in Denmark after a four-day official visit to Austria. After his stay in Denmark, he is scheduled to visit France.
