The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) and the armed forces of Kyrgyzstan will hold a joint anti-terror military exercise on the border areas of the two countries, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said Tuesday.

It will be the first time for China to hold a joint cross-border military exercise with its neighbor.

Making the remarks at the ministry's regular press conference, Zhang said after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States, anti-terrorism has become a major task for all countries and the international community has strengthened anti-terror cooperation.

It is against this background that China and Kyrgyzstan will conduct such a military exercise, the spokeswoman said.

Zhang said this military exercise, the first bilateral anti-terror military exercise conducted by members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), is a concrete action in accordance with the SCO Charter and the Shanghai pact on the fight against terrorism, separatism and extremism. It demonstrates determination of China and Kyrgyzstan to jointly fight against terrorism, she said.

This military exercise will not only strengthen the mutual trust of the two countries, but also have a significant effect on maintaining peace in the border areas of the two countries, said Zhang.
