The Chinese government attaches great importance to the GMS Economic Cooperation, a Chinese senior official said Wednesday in Phnom Penh.

Jin Liqun, Head of the Chinese delegation and Vice-Minister of Finance, made the remarks at Wednesday's Ministerial Conference of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS).

Ministers of six countries bordering the Mekong River--Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam -- met here to strengthen cooperation in implementing 11 flagship initiatives over the next 10 years.

While praising the GMS Program as a pragmatic one, Jin said "China has also been active in working with member countries in developing projects covering areas as flood control, water resource management, navigation, agriculture, customs house clearance capacity enhancement and disaster alleviation, and has achieved significant results in this connection."

Since the 10th Ministerial Conference last year, China has actively participated in a number of key projects related to subregional cooperation. The North-South Economic Corridor among China, Laos and Thailand is one of the three economic corridors planned by GMS program, which also includes East-West and Southern Economic Corridors.

The 11th Ministerial Conference of the GMS Economic Cooperation Program focused on discussing and reviewing the GMS Program and the 10 year GMS Strategic Framework, as well as preparation for the first ever GMS Summit of Leaders, which will be held on Nov. 3in Phnom Penh.

"The forthcoming GMS Summit will be a significant step forward in our subregional cooperation," Jin said, adding that China are looking forward to further cooperating with other partners, and will do its utmost to make it happen.

Meanwhile, the conference has encouraged the development partners and the private sector in participating in and supporting the GMS Program's 11 flagship initiatives which will bring greater connectivity to the GMS region.

The GMS Ministerial Conference was preceded by the GMS senior officials meeting (SOM) on Monday and Development Partners meetingon Tuesday.

Since the 10-year Strategic Framework for the GMS initiated by the ADB in 1992, the GMS Ministerial Conference, as the policy-making body of the GMS Program, has provided overall guidance in the content, pace and direction of subregional cooperation among the six participating countries.
