US President George W. Bush plans to send a senior State Department official as US envoy to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in the near future, the White House announced Wednesday.

Bush has informed South Korean President Kim Dae-jung of his decision in a telephone call, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer told reporters.

"The two leaders agreed that real progress with the North depends on full resolution of the security issues on the Korean Peninsula, including the North's possession and pursuit of weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles," Fleischer said.

US Assistant Secretary of State James Kelly will be dispatched to Pyongyang soon, according to a senior Bush administration official, who asked not to be identified.

The announcement came after meetings between Jack Pritchard, the State Department's top official on the DPRK affairs, and the DPRK representatives Monday and Tuesday in New York.
