A bus strike caused tail-backs into major cities and traffic jams in urban centers across
Italy
on Wednesday.
Italian trade unions claimed a 98 percent success rate for the strike, called to demand better pay and working conditions for bus, tram and subway workers.
In Rome, nine buses out of 10 have reportedly stayed in parkinglots, leaving commuters the option of going to work by driving, walking or taking a taxi.
It was a similar story in Milan where officials said traffic jams were "critical but not chaotic."
Subways closed shortly after 9 a.m. in both cities.
Naples, a city famed for unorthodox driving, seemed to cope with the strike better with 90 percent of workers taking the day off on the round-Vesuvius commuter line, officials said.
Italian trade union officials said the strike appeared to have gone better than two previous stoppages, respectively on May 17 and June 21, and would give them more clout in their next round ofbargaining.
