Subway Project to Begin in NE China Industrial City

Construction of the No.1 subway line in Shenyang City, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province, is scheduled to begin in early June next year, the city government has announced.

Construction of the No.1 subway line in Shenyang City, capital of northeast China's Liaoning Province, is scheduled to begin in early June next year, the city government has announced.

The subway line will run 22 km from Zhangshi station in the Shenyang Economic and Technological Development Zone in the west and to Liming Cultural Palace in the east. There will be 18 stations along the route.

The subway will link major business centers, residential areas and bus and railway stations in the city.

It is expected to be open by the end of 2006.

Initially some 300,000 passengers will be handled daily with this number rising to nearly 1 million in the long-term.

Shenyang, one of China's major industrial bases, with a population of more than 7.2 million, is the biggest city in northeast China.

China also plans to build subways in the cities of Chongqing, Shenzhen, Nanjing, Wuhan and Qingdao over the next five years. The city of Suzhou in east China's Jiangsu Province already has plans for a subway.

Currently, four Chinese cities have subways: Beijing, Shanghai,Tianjin and Guangzhou.
