Nepali King, PM Condemn Indian Temple Massacre

Nepali King Gyanendra and PrimeMinister Sher Bahadur Deuba have sent messages to the Indian president and prime minister separately, condemning the attack on a Hindu temple in India by terrorists, the state-run Radio Nepal reported from Kathmandu Thursday.

Nepali King Gyanendra and PrimeMinister Sher Bahadur Deuba have sent messages to the Indian president and prime minister separately, condemning the attack on a Hindu temple in India by terrorists, the state-run Radio Nepal reported rom Kathmandu Thursday.

In a message sent Wednesday to Indian President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, King Gyanendra expressed shock over the "cowardly and mindless act of terrorism" at the Swaminarain temple complex Tuesday in Gandhinagar in west India's Gujarat state, which resulted in the death of at least 28 people.

"We stand by India in her fight against terrorism and believe that all countries must unite in combating and eliminating this heinous menace," the radio quoted Gyanendra as saying.

Condemning terrorism in all its forms, the king noted that it couldn't be justified as a means to achieving any end.

Meanwhile, Nepali Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba also expressed deep shock at the attack, saying the Nepali government condemns such terrorist attacks.

In a message to Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, Deuba said "Nepal, which has also been the victim of terrorism, fully understands the agony and pain that results from such barbaric acts of terrorists."

Hinduism is the state religion of Nepal, with as many as 85.6 percent of the Himalayan kingdom's population believing in Hinduism.
