The New York City Council on Wednesday adopted a proclamation to congratulate the 53rd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC), looking forward to better US-China relations.

The proclamation said the council is pleased and proud to join the Chinese community and the community-at-large in celebrating China's anniversary because the PRC, founded in 1949 after over 50 years of war and suffering during the 20th century, has the world 's largest population and preserves the magnificent and old culture.

The relations between the PRC and the United States "have helped us better understand our differences and similarities", and the two countries have recently joined together to combat their common enemy of terrorism, the proclamation said.

The spirit of cooperation and exchange between the USA and the PRC "has created increased opportunities for trade, and has expanded the contours of education, technology and culture for each country," it said. The council congratulates the PRC on the anniversary of its founding and "looks forward to our great partnership," it added.

Council member David Weprin, Chairperson of Finance Committee and council member John C. Liu, chairperson of Transportation Committee came to the Consulate-General of the PRC in New York and delivered the proclamation to Consul-General Zhang Hongxi in person.

Ambassador Zhang Hongxi thanked the city council for the friendly gesture and said the consulate will do more to promote Sino-US relations and will encourage Chinese immigrants to further contribute to the recovery and development of the New York City.
