Beijing Establishes Archive of Wealthy Tax Payers to Fight Tax

Beijing residents with an annual income exceeding 100,000 yuan (12,000 US dollars) are being requested to regularly file tax reports with the tax authority for the establishment of an archive network, as part of the campaign against tax evasion.

The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Local Taxes Thursday announced provisional measures to tighten tax controls including the launching of a new website "www.tax861.gov.cn" for on-line tax payment, which will be operational beginning next year.

Large number of wealthy persons are living in the Chinese capital. Its income tax revenue in 2001 totaled 8 billion yuan (964 million US dollars). That figure is expected to exceed 10 billion yuan (1.2 billion US dollars) this year.

Statistics gathered by the tax authority show that nearly 100,000 Beijing residents earn more than 100,000 yuan (12,000 US dollars) a year.

Wang Jiping, director of the bureau, said at Thursday's news conference that some 100 million yuan (12 million US dollars) have been recovered from tax dodgers so far this year.

Several major cases of tax evasion have been discovered, he said.

Liu Xiaoqing, China's best-known actress, was arrested on charges of evading up to 10 million yuan (1.2 million US dollars) in taxes in June this year.
