Hosting Games Economically Marks Progressive Operation: Chinese Officials

If there was anything in the athletes' village that greatly impressed the Chinese delegation, it was the economic way Busan ran it and that marked a good hosting idea evolution, said senior Chinese Asiad officials on Friday.

If there was anything in the athletes' village that greatly impressed the Chinese delegation, it was the economic way Busan ran it and that marked a good hosting idea evolution, said senior Chinese Asiad officials on Friday.

As Asiad and Olympics are getting bigger and bigger, running it in a satisfactory but still economically balanced way poses a challenge to organizers of any host city.

Duan Shijie, vice president of the Chinese Olympic Committee who has stayed in the village overnight, said economic cost might have been in the minds of Busan organizers.

Duan, also deputy Chef de Mission of the Chinese delegation, heeded the difference in running way between Busan and Seoul in 1988.

"In the Seoul Asian Games, South Koreans were eager to showcase their rising economy and everything was more than up to the standard," Duan said.

"Most of the services in Busan village look fine," he added. "But organizers stopped short of going further due to economic concerns."

He Huixian, vice president of the Chinese Olympic Committee, said Busan's operation idea showed the trends of hosting international games.

"The way Busan runs Asiad is part of the hosting idea evolution and it marks a good trend," said He, also deputy Chef de Mission of the Chinese delegation.

Unlike the Olympics, usually a grand one-off event for many of the host nations, Asiad is part of a consequent series of international games for some countries.

Affordable and sustainable hosting might top the operation priorities.

"Frugality in games operation would greatly relaxed the burden upon the host city," said He.
