The United States on Friday rebuked Israel for "targeted killings" of Palestinians, saying that such tactics unnecessarily endanger innocent civilian lives.

"We are against targeted killings," State Department spokesman Richard Boucher told reporters, responding to a rocket attack by Israelis aimed at Hamas leader Mohammad Deif.

"We are against the use of heavy weaponry in urban areas, even when it comes to people like Mohammad Deif who have been responsible for the deaths of American citizens," he said.

"Anyone responsible for terrorism and violence needs to be brought to justice, but operations such as those conducted in Gazaendanger civilian lives and inflame tensions," Boucher noted.

Deif, a leader of the Hamas military wing, has been accused by Israelis for terrorist attacks. Earlier Friday, Israeli military helicopter launched missiles in Gaza in an attempt to kill him butlater admitted that the Hamas leader has survived the raid.

But two others were killed and 25 more injured, including 10 children, in the Israeli attacks.
