About 2,000 Egyptians protested against the United States and Israel Saturday afternoon on the second anniversary of the Palestinian uprising against an Israeli occupation.

The protests took place at Tahrir Square (Liberation Square) in downtown Cairo, a Xinhua correspondent reported at the scene.

This was the first protest in public against the United States and Israel since Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has been again besieged by Israeli troops since September 19.

The protestors from all walks of life gathered at Tahrir Square at 12:30 local time (1030 GMT), chanting anti-US and anti-Israel slogans.

"We call on Arab leaders to support the Palestinian intifada (uprising) to face Israel's aggressive policy," some protestors shouted.

At the scene, angry protestors also burnt US and Israeli national flags, denouncing the United States for taking a pro-Israel attitude in the Palestinian-Israeli conflicts.
