The Asian Games records were broken twice by Japanese men swimmers in the heats Monday, the first day after the Games was officially opened in the South Korean port city of Busan.

Takahiro Mori swam two minutes 3.03 seconds in the men's 200-meter individual medley, 0.31 second better than the old mark of 2:03.35 set by China's Xiong Guoming at 1998 Bangkok Asian Games.

One of world top men swimmers, Kosuke Kitajima of Japan, touched the finish pad in 1:00.71 in the men's 100-meter breaststroke preliminary, lifting nearly two seconds of the 1:02.04 old mark.

The competitions were hot in the heats with about 400-strong South Korean cheering groups boosting athletes' morale.

Chinese women swimmer Yang Yu led the 200-meter freestyle with clear advantage. Her closest rival, Nagai Tomoko of Japan timed over one second slower.

Xu Yanwei, another Chinese entry, finished the first place in another qualifying heat.

Swimmers of South Korean, the host country, failed to distinguish themselves in the heats. Yet six Korean swimmers out of eight got the qualifications to enter the finals Monday evening.
