Tan Xue More Likely to Take Title for Women's Saber Individual

Chinese top female saber fencer TanXue, the champion of the individual at this year's Lisbon World Fencing Championships, is the most favorite for the individual title at the Busan Asiad, Tan's coach Mao Yixun said Monday.

Chinese top female saber fencer TanXue, the champion of the individual at this year's Lisbon World Fencing Championships, is the most favorite for the individual title at the Busan Asiad, Tan's coach Mao Yixun said Monday.

Tan Xue has advanced to the semi-finals of the competitions which kicked off at Gangseo Stadium Monday morning. The other three semi-finalists are South Korean Lee Shin-mi and Lee Gyu-young and Japanese Hisagae Madok.

"Tan is the most powerful fencer among the four, " Mao said before the start of the semi-final clashes.

"So, in normal situation, Tan should collect the gold," he added.

Nine fencers from five countries and regions are registered forcompeting in the women's saber individual competitions. They were divided into two groups for round-robin preliminary matches and the fencer at the bottom of the scoring list was eliminated. The last eight entered the quarterfinal clashes.

"Tan did not meet any strong resistance in the matches before the semi-final," Mao said.
