Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.(TSMC) retained its top position in this year's "Taiwan 10 Guidepost Enterprises" poll conducted by Common Wealth magazine, according to reports Monday.

Unlike in previous years when high-technology companies dominated the Common Wealth Top Ten Enterprises list, companies in traditional industries and businesses grasped five places on the list.

TSMC was followed by Hon Hai Precision Machinery, Formosa Plastics, President Enterprise, Quanta Computer, Asustek Computer, the Chi Mei Group, Chinatrust Commercial Bank, the President 7-Eleven Chain Store and Media Tek, in that order.

The Common Wealth magazine conducted a poll of 500 financial and stock analysts and 1,100 business owners and executives to select the 10 most respectable enterprises in Taiwan based on criteria including corporate leadership, innovation, financial capability, forward-looking ability, operational performances and the value for long-term investment.

Hon Hai Precision Machinery edged one notch up to second place this year after it was ranked No. 1 in forward-looking ability, operational performances and value for long-term investment.

Hi-tech big names like United Microelectronics Corp., Via Technologies and Acer, which were on the 2001 "top 10" list, failed to make this year's selection.
