Both men's and women's teams of China cruised into the semi-finals of the 14th Asian Games table tennis team competition after crushing Japan and Chinese Hong Kong Thursday evening.

The Chinese men, featuring world No.1 and No.2 Wang Liqin and Ma Lin and veteran star Kong Linghui, faced little resistance from Japan in their straight victory. They will meet Chinese Hong Kong, which beat Vietnam easily in another quarterfinal, in the semi-finals to be staged on Friday.

For the Chinese girls, it was already the second victory against Hong Kong in two days, as they had upset the same opponents 3-0 in a preliminary match of the Group A on Wednesday.

However, the Hong Kong team this time dispatched its top player, world No.11 Tie Ya'na, who was rested in the group match. Still, the Hong Kong players found it a mission impossible to conquer the all-star Chinese team, which sent out world No.1 and No.2 Wang Nanand Zhang Yining, as well as the young star Niu Jianfeng.

The Chinese women will clash with Singapore, another opponent it had beaten once in the group matches, in Friday's semi-finals. The Singaporeans had outclassed Chinese Taipei 3-0 to book a berth in the last four.

"So far my teams have performed quite normally, with no major problems emerging. But we still needs to make some adjustments forthe following matches," said Chinese head coach Cai Zhenhua after both matches.
