S. Korea Defend Men's and Women's Titles in Soft Tennis

South Korean men and women's team lived up to expectations when they successfully defended their titles in the soft tennis team competitions here Thursday at the 14th Asian Games.

South Korean men and women's team lived up to expectations when they successfully defended their titles in the soft tennis team competitions here Thursday at the 14th Asian Games.

The South Korean men outscored their last but long-time arch rivals Chinese Taipei 3-0.

With the triumph, the South Koreans took the gold with four straight wins.

There are five teams, both men and women, taking part in the team round-robin events, with the top team capturing the gold.

Japan took the silver by beating China 3-1, with three wins against one loss. The bronze medal went to Chinese Taipei, collecting two wins against two loses while China and Mongolia were ranked fourth and fifth.

In the women's section, hosts South Korea did not meet much trouble, blanking their arch opponents Japan 3-0 and clinching thetitle with four victories against no loss. Japan ranked second with three wins and one loss.

In a match fighting for the third place, Chinese Taipei toppledChina 3-1. China and Mongolia finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Soft tennis attracted seven participating teams in this games, featuring seven events including men's and women's team, singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

The event became a performance one in the Beijing Asian Games in 1990 and it went on by turning out to be a medal event in the next games in Hiroshima in 1994 and Bangkok in 1998.
