Marco Fu finally reached Chinese HongKong's golden expectation as he won the snooker team title in the Asian Games.

World number 27 Fu, together with his teammate Chan Kwok Ming and Fung Kwok Wai, beat their Chinese counterparts Pang Weiguo, Ding Junhui and Jin Long 2-1.

Chan was soon beaten by Jin 3-0, fourth-placed in the Asian Games, while 24-year-old Fung managed to overcome the nine-year-younger Ding 3-1.

All of Hong Kong's gold stake was put on Fu when he was stretched into the fifth set by Pang after the latter came from two sets down to level the score.

Nerves understandably came to both men in the decider as the usually composed Fu knocked the cue ball into the hole from the very start to add four points to Pang's score board.

But it was Fu that first made a sizable break as he left few chances to Pang later, and clinched the nerve-jangling tiebreaker 78-27.

Hong Kong team manager Lo Tsun Ying grinned to the ears as his boys defend the title successfully.

"I could not be happier because we had great pressure to defendthe title."

"Marco was also bearing big burden since he had missed the snooker doubles title a day earlier."

Fu, however, was not satisfied with his performance despite thegold medal.

"I did not play well all day. There was huge pressure on me,"said the 24-year-old Fu. "But Pang was even worse than me as he was more nervous. And I took that advantage."

It was the first time Fu and Pang met in an international eventwhile they had four encounters, according to Fu, unofficially. "I won all the four matches. So I am in an advantageous position psychologically."

"But China is really a strong team with Ding, one of the best players in the world and the other two playing professional games in Britain."

The sporting hero in Hong Kong will dash to Preston, England assoon as the snooker wraps up on October 5 as he will compete in the season opening LG Cup which carries world ranking points.

Before that, Fu said, he wished to bag home another gold.

"I am looking forward to the singles title though it can be tough."
