China's Kang Takes Asiad Balance Beam Gold

Chinese Kang Xin scored 9.300 points to take the women's balance beam gold medal at the Asian Games Saturday. Oksana Chusovitina of Uzbekistan got the silver in 8.975 points, while DPR Korean Pyon Kwang-sun bagged the bronze in 8.800.

Chinese young gymnast Kang Xin grasped the gold medal at the gymnastics balance beam event Saturday, the sixth day of the fortnight Asian Games, edging Olympic champion Oskana Chusovitina and DPRK's Pyon Kwang-sun to the second and third places.

Kang, an international debutante, scored 9.300 with a starting value of 9.700 to pocket her second gold, China's 11th in the five-day gymnastics events starting on Tuesday.

The 16-year-old, who wept after the women's all-around event onThursday as she fell off the beam, appeared calm and earnest on the beam this evening.

This the only individual apparatus event she participated.

Oskana Chusovitina of Uzbekistan took the silver medal with 8.975. The 27-year-old mother performed on the beam with a starting value of 9.500.

Pyon Kwang-sun from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea came third with a point of 8.800.
