Iraq reiterated on Sunday its determination to defend itself against any military attacks launched by the United States.

"We are not advocates for war and do not want any war," Izzat Ibrahim, vice chairman of the all-powerful Revolutionary Command Council (RCC) said while reviewing a military parade in the northern city of Kirkuk, the official Iraq TV reported.

"But if the war is imposed on us, we will fight to defend our principles and values," Ibrahim said.

About 10,000 Iraqi volunteers from Kirkuk, with rifles or portable anti-tank missile launchers on their shoulders, marched through a parade ground as several military choppers hovered overhead.

"The city (Kirkuk) represents all of Iraq's cities...All the young men are armed in the city and we have reviewed a model," Ibrahim told reporters present at the scene.

The United States and its closest ally Britain, accusing Iraq ofsecretly pursuing weapons of mass destruction, have been engaged ina joint diplomatic offensive to push through a new UN Security Council resolution on Iraq's disarmament.

The proposed UN resolution is reported to set a seven-day deadline for Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to accept all its demands and then open all suspected sites, including his palaces, to international weapons inspectors.

The tough demands are coupled with a warning that "all necessarymeans," including the use of force, would be applied against Iraq if it fails to come into line.
