Japan will place the AUM Shinrikyo cult under surveillance for an additional three years, Kyodo News reported Monday.

The Justice Ministry's Public Security Investigation Agency is to ask the Public Security Examination Commission to carry out thedrive, Kyodo said.

The Agency has inspected 85 AUM facilities in 16 prefectures since January 2000 in order to monitor its activities under an anti-AUM law. AUM has renamed itself "Aleph."

The law, under which the cult is obliged to report the names ofits members and details of its assets to security authorities, stipulates the commission is responsible for deciding whether the cult remains a danger to the public and whether surveillance for up to a maximum of three years is needed.

Based on the inspection results up to now, the agency has decided that the inspection should be continued because AUM founder Shoko Asahara, 47, who is standing trial for his role in major crimes, including the 1995 sarin gas attack on Tokyo's subway system, still holds influence over cult members, Kyodo added.
