Chinese Vice President Visits Southwestern City

Chinese Vice President Hu Jintao on Monday concluded a five-day inspection tour of Chongqing in southwest China, to see the progress in local economic development.

Chinese Vice President Hu Jintao on Monday concluded a five-day inspection tour of Chongqing in southwest China, to see the progress in local economic development.

While visiting major construction sites including the city's belt freeway, a bridge over the Yangtze River and a new urban district, Hu said the municipality should grasp opportunities along with the national policy of developing the west.

Apart from making good use of funds allocated by the Ministry of Finance, the city should also try to attract more public financing, the Vice President said.

At the giant Three Gorges dam site, Hu paid visits to local residents who would move out of their homes to make way for the project. He asked local officials to handle resettlement carefullyto make the transfer smooth.

Hu also visited local families living in poor conditions and urged local officials to make more efforts to address poverty and assist laid-off people to be employed again.
