HK retail Sales for August Down 2.9 pct in Volume

The overall volume of retail sales for August decreased by 2.9 percent in Hong Kong compared with August 2001 after netting out the effect of price changes, said the Census and Statistics Department Monday.

According to the provisional figures on retail sales, the valueof total retail sales in August 2002 was estimated at 14.6 billionHK dollars (1.87 billion US dollars), the department said.

Sales of fuels declined the most, by 17.9 percent in volume, followed by sales of furniture and fixtures, by 16.2 percent in volume; jewelry, watches and clocks, and valuable gifts, by 14.6 percent; miscellaneous consumer goods, by 5.2 percent; wearing apparel, by 4.4 percent; electrical goods and photographic equipment, by 1.0 percent; and commodities in supermarkets, by 0.4percent.

Meanwhile, sales of motor vehicles and parts rose markedly, by 17.0 percent in volume, followed by sales of footwear, allied products and other clothing accessories, by 6.4 percent in volume;commodities in department stores, by 2.3 percent; miscellaneous consumer durable goods, by 1.2 percent; food, alcoholic drinks andtobacco by 1.1 percent.
