The planned expansion of the Erez Industrial Zone jointly run by Israel and the Palestinians will begin in early 2003, the online business daily of Globes reported on Monday.

Some 4,500 Palestinians are being employed by some 180 plants at the industrial zone, next to the Erez checkpoint between Israel and the Palestinian-ruled Gaza Strip.

The planned expansion is expected to provide 10,000 jobs for the Palestinians, according to the report.

Hundreds of Israelis are also working at the industrial zone, where main businesses involve textiles, furniture, foodstuff, garages, as well as steel and iron foundries.

The two-year bloody conflict between Israel and the Palestinians has caused no vital effect on the industrial zone, the report said.

Up to 30 new plants, mostly engaged in textiles and furniture, have opened in the industrial zone since the outbreak of the conflict two years ago.

Some 4,000 Palestinians from the Gaza Strip have continued, almost without any interruption for the past two years, to work in the industrial zone, which is said by Israel as a proof that Israeli-Palestinian cooperation is possible.
