Burundian Government, Rebels Ink Ceasefire Pact

The Burundian transitional government and two Hutu rebel groups signed a ceasefire agreement here on Monday evening, making a significant step toward restoring peace and order in the war-torn tiny African country.

The Burundian transitional government and two Hutu rebel groups signed a ceasefire agreement here on Monday evening, making a significant step toward restoring peace and order in the war-torn tiny African country.

Palipehutu-Forces for National Liberation led by Alain Mugabarabona and the National Council for Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD) faction led by Jean Bosco Ndayikengurukiye signed the ceasefire agreement proposed by heads of state to the Great Lakes Regional Summit on Burundi.

However, CNDD-FDD faction led by Pierre Nkurunziza, which is believed to be the strongest faction among Hutu rebel groups, rejected the agreement.
