Chinese President Jiang Zemin said Tuesday that China welcomes US companies to invest or launch cooperative projects in China, and encourages its own companies togo abroad with advanced technologies and management expertise.

Jiang made the remarks when meeting with Jeff Immelt, chairman and CEO of the General Electric (GE).

"With its accession to the World Trade Organization, China willopen to the outside world on a broader scale and at a higher level," Jiang said.

He spoke highly of GE's fruitful cooperation with China over the years and its efforts in promoting Sino-US relations.

Jiang also told the GE chairman that he expected to have in-depth discussions with US President George W. Bush on Sino-US relations and other issues of common concern during his visit to the United States later this month.

Immelt said that GE had dramatically expanded its business scope in China in the past year, from purchasing raw materials to research and development, and services.

"But I have to be humble in saying that this is just the beginning, because there is still great potential to tap," he said.
