Japanese Abducted by DPRK Reportedly will Return

Five Japanese abducted by agents of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) decades ago will return to Japan next Tuesday or later, local media reported Wednesday.

Five Japanese abducted by agents of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) decades ago will return to Japan next Tuesday and stay for about a week, Kyodo News reported Wednesday.

According to the country's government sources, the five will be returning to Japan via Beijing.

They are expected to visit their hometowns during their stay, the sources said, adding that Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukudais to make an announcement later in the day after a ministerial meeting on the matter.

Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi was quoted as saying that the Japanese government is "making efforts to be able to respond to the requests of the families" of the abducted.

DPRK leader Kim Jong Il admitted the Japanese were kidnapped last month in a summit with Koizumi.
