By this weekend no container ships will be sailing from Shanghai Port, the world's fifth largest container shipping port, to the west coast of the United States if the current US shipping strike goes on.

As some ships cannot leave the US west coast, the number of out-going container ships leaving Shanghai will have to be cut from Thursday because of a shortage of ships, said an official from the port's control center.

Tao Huifu, a leading port official, said that 60 container ships are scheduled for the US west coast each month. This route accounts for approximately 18 percent to 20 percent of the port's container turnover with it taking 14 or 15 days to complete a one-way trip.

"Until the issue is solved, all goods bound for the US west coast will have to stockpile at the port," he said.

The port handled a total of 6.156 million containers in the first nine months of this year, Tao noted. This is expected to reach between 8.2 million and 8.4 million by the end of the year if not affected by the US on-going shipping strike.
