Russia
on Wednesday launched its first nationwide census since the disintegration of the Soviet Union in early 1990s.
The State Statistics Committee, which is overseeing the 161 million US dollars, week-long census, said Tuesday that after months of preparation it was ready to count the country's steadilyshrinking population.
The authorities, which hope the census will help them draw up new policies, have repeatedly called on people to take an active part in it, but many residents are cautious in the protection of their privacy rights.
According to the Russian Interior Ministry, security has been tightened across the country during the survey, and about 200,000 policemen are on duty until the end of the population count next Wednesday.
Initial results of the census are expected to be released in the first quarter of next year and final results should be published by the end of the year.
The Russian government currently estimates the population at 144 million people.
