Polls of General Elections Start in Pakistan
Polls of general elections for the National Assembly and four provincial assemblies in Pakistan began at 8:00 a.m. (local time) on Thursday.

Polls of general elections for the National Assembly and four provincial assemblies in
Pakistan
began at 8:00 a.m. (local time) on Thursday.
The 72 million eligible voters, of whom 33 million are women, will use their right to elect representatives for 272 general seats to national and 577 general seats in the four provincial assemblies.
There are 62 political parties contesting the elections and 7,180 candidates are in the run for the general seats of national and provincial assemblies.
Of the 7,180 candidates, 2,788 are independent candidates that are contesting the elections.
Starting from 1970, seven elections had been held till 1997 while the October 2002 elections will be the 8th in this sequences.The previous elections were held in 1970, 1977, 1985, 1988, 1990, 1993 and 1997.
In a nation-wide address over radio and television on Wednesday evening, President General Pervez Musharraf assured the nation that the elections would be completely fair, free and transparent.
He said he would hand over executive powers to the new prime minister and relinquish the office of the Chief Executive.
He expressed the hope that the general elections would usher inan era of genuine and sustainable democracy.
