China Producing Computer Chips, Ending Foreign Monopolization

China has begun production of competitive computer chips as its own intellectual property in an effort to break away with foreign monopolization, according to sources from Zhongguancun Science and Technology Park in Beijing Thursday.

Sources noted that Philips, Samsung, TCL, Legend and a number of other leading computer brands in China are using the image decoding chips of Beijing-based VIMICRO Corporation. US firms previously monopolized the supply of these chips.

Another Chinese chip maker in Beijing has started the commercial production of two types of central processing units, or CPUs, which have been installed on network computers of 11 primary and middle schools and colleges, and a library in Beijing. Li Delei, chairman of the company's board of directors, is confident that the two CPUs will be used in still wider spheres, including finance, taxation, logistics and industrial control.

On the eve of National Day on Oct. 1, the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced its success in developing a high-performance general chip and has put it into batch production.
