The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Thursday accused the United States of labeling it a suppresser of religious freedom, in a recently released report.

"The US anti-DPRK diatribe over non-existent religious issue is an undisguised and shameful interference in the internal affairs of the DPRK, a product of the hostile policy pursued by the Bush administration against the DPRK," a Foreign Ministry spokesman told the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The freedoms of religious belief and religious activities were fully guaranteed by law in the DPRK, the spokesman said.

The US State Department, in the "International Religious Report 2002" released on Tuesday, claimed that the DPRK denied its people religious freedom.

After taking office in January 2001, US President George W. Bush reversed his predecessor Bill Clinton's engagement policy towards the DPRK and took a much harsher policy. He called the DPRK a "sponsor of terrorism" and part of an "axis of evil", along with Iran and Iraq.

United States special envoy James Kelly's three-day visit to Pyongyang early this month resumed the high-level bilateral dialogue, but the DPRK branded Kelly as "arrogant and highhanded".
