Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday met with Vietnam's Communist Party leader Nong Duc Manh to discuss political relations and economic cooperation.

During the meeting in the Kremlin, Putin said Russia gave high priority to relations with Vietnam, and urged good use of the traditional friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

He said the two sides had enjoyed progress in all directions of their relationship and Manh's present visit would give new impetus to such ties.

Manh, General Secretary of the Vietnamese Communist Party, said the strategic cooperation between Hanoi and Moscow promotes the interests of both countries.

As to economic cooperation, Putin said he was satisfied with the positive change in bilateral trade and economic relations over the past year.

Russian officials said trade turnover between the two countries reached 330 million US dollars during the first half of this year,a 40 percent increase over the same period last year.

Russia, Putin said, plans to hold a forum next year for Vietnamese graduates from Russian colleges and universities, and had invited Manh, who once studied at a forestry institute in St. Petersburg, to take part in the forum.

Manh arrived here Wednesday for a five-day visit. Relations between Moscow and Hanoi cooled after the Soviet Union's disintegration in the early 1990s, but were revived by Putin's visit to Hanoi last year.
