Chinese Vice-president Meets Micronesian Counterpart

Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao said Thursday that China thanks and appreciates the Micronesian government for its adherence to the "one China" policy.

Chinese Vice-president Meets Micronesian Counterpart
Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao said Thursday that China thanks and appreciates the Micronesian government for its adherence to the "one China" policy.

Hu made remark during a meeting with Vice-President Redley Killion of the Federated States of Micronesia, here on a six-day working visit.

Hu said China attaches great importance to its relations with Micronesia and is willing to maintain healthy and sustainable development of bilateral relations on the basis of peaceful co-existence.

Full diplomatic ties between the two countries were established in 1989, and since then both sides have seen rich fruit in fields such as business and trade, agriculture, fishery and culture.

Hu said China is pleased regional economic cooperation in the South Pacific area has entered a new stage. China sincerely hopes the situation in that area remains stable and the countries there achieve sustainable development.

China values friendly cooperation with all countries in the South Pacific and is willing to work together with Micronesia and its neighbors to boost mutually beneficial cooperation, he said.

Redley Killion said he hopes to learn much about China during his first trip to the country and to promote cooperation between the two countries.

Killion said the Micronesian people are grateful for the assistance that China has offered over the years, which greatly helped Micronesian economic and social development. He expressed the hope of improving Micronesia's cooperation with China.

On the Taiwan issue, Killion said the Micronesian government has adhered firmly to the "one China" policy since Micronesia and China established diplomatic ties and it will continue to observe this policy in the future.

The two vice-presidents attended the signing ceremony of an economic and technological cooperation pact between China and Micronesia following their meeting.
