A 43-year-old South Korean man was sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment in South Korea Thursday for murdering his wife in Hong Kong in 1987, according to a news release by the Information Services Department.

This was the first case dealt with under the Mutual Legal Assistance Agreement in Criminal Matters Agreement with South of Korea since the agreement came into force on February 25, 2000.

The court heard that a 34-year-old South Korean woman was found under a bed in her flat on Knutsford Terrace in Tsim Sha Shui on January 26, 1987.

Investigations revealed that she had been strangled and placed there about three weeks earlier. Her 43-year-old husband was wanted in connection with the case after the case came to light.

After the Mutual Legal Assistance Agreement came into force in 2000, a formal request was received by the Secretary for Justice of Hong Kong and assistance was given by Police officers of the Organized Crime and Triad Bureau to the Korean prosecutors.

The man was arrested for murder in South Korea on October 24, 2001. He was convicted and sentenced today.

The case represents an excellent example of the effectiveness of the bilateral agreement and the cooperation between Hong Kong Police and overseas law enforcement agencies in the pursuit of criminals who try to use international boundaries to avoid apprehension.
